Vanaf de eeuwwisseling en met name 2001 is de groei afgenomen. De algemene dalende lijn heeft zich doorgezet na de terroristische aanslagen in New York op 11 september 2001. Vooral luchtvaartmaatschappijen en bijbehorende sectoren zijn wereldwijd zwaar getroffen; ook de Nederlandse luchtvaartmaatschappijen leden verlies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0.4em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.5em; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 1.5em;\">Het nieuwe belastingstelsel dat begin 2001 is ingevoerd was erop gericht de hoge loonbelastingtarieven te temperen en de fiscale lasten deels over te hevelen naar consumptiegoederen en -diensten. Nederland was \u00e9\u00e9n van de eerste landen die het besluit aangaande de\u00a0<a style=\"text-decoration: none; color: #002bb8; background-image: none; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; -webkit-background-clip: initial; -webkit-background-origin: initial; background-color: initial; background-position: initial initial;\" title=\"Euro (munteenheid)\" href=\"http:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Euro_(munteenheid)\" target=\"_blank\">euro<\/a> als Europese munteenheid heeft geratificeerd.
